FAQ

What will happen at the CERN Photowalk?

CERN is organizing an “invitation-only” Photowalk on Friday 1st June 2018. At this event, a handful of photographers will get the chance to come to CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, for an unforgettable day spent looking behind-the-scenes of the laboratory.

Register now for your chance to be one of the lucky few to:

  • Take part in an exclusive CERN Photowalk
  • Explore CERN
  • Enjoy lunch with some CERN physicists in the laboratory’s restaurant
  • Share your #PhysPics18 photos on social media from the laboratory where the World Wide Web was born

The best photos taken at CERN will be selected by a local jury to be exhibited. Each laboratory will then choose three photos to be submitted to the Global Physics Photowalk. A public vote and an international jury will finally select the Global winners, who will have the opportunity to be featured in Symmetry magazine, the CERN Courier (the International Journal for High Energy Physics).

An opportunity not to be missed!

How do I register?

Complete the online registration form here. Registration opens at on Monday 26 March and closes at 12.00 CEST on Wednesday 4 April. CERN will select participants from those who have completed the registration form. Successful applicants will be informed as soon as possible. Unfortunately it will not be possible to contact unsuccessful applicants. Only one application per person will be accepted.

Do I need to take photos on a particular device?

You must use a camera/smartphone with at least 10 MPixels for the competition. You are welcome to bring lower resolution devices, in addition, to post images on social media.

Do I need to have a social media account to apply?

Yes. We want you to have a great CERN Photowalk, and we also want you to share your CERN experience with a wider audience online via social media (e.g. Instagram, Twitter, etc). Please list your social media account names in the application form.

What are CERN Photowalk registration requirements?

Applicants must be at least 18 years old. CERN employees and users, as well as their family members, are not eligible to register.

By registering for the 2018 CERN Photowalk, you indicate that, if selected, you will travel to CERN, Meyrin (near Geneva) for the day of Friday 1st June 2018 and attend the event in person. You are responsible for your own expenses and logistics for travel, accommodation, and other costs, however lunch on the day will be provided.

CERN is not responsible for loss or damage incurred as a result of any participant’s attendance at this event, or if the event is cancelled with limited or no notice. You will need to bring a passport or equivalent travel document with you that matches the information provided on the application form, both for identity verification purposes and because you may cross the border between Switzerland and France during the event.

Photos will be taken at this event, both by CERN and other participants on the Photowalk. By registering for this CERN Photowalk you give your consent to appear in any photos taken at the event that CERN decides to use or that are used by any third parties.

Which nationalities are able to apply?

Nationals of all countries can apply. We remind you that you are responsible for all costs of your attendance at this event, including travel to and from CERN and your subsistence and accommodation in the region.

Can I bring a guest?

No, each place is for one named person only (you) and is non-transferable. Each individual wishing to attend must register separately.

What if I cannot come to the event?

If you are not available on Friday 1st June to participate in this Photowalk at CERN, you should not register for this event.
If, believing you are free on Friday 1st June and having registered and having subsequently been selected, you then are unable to attend, please let us know so that your place can be reallocated.
This Photowalk is part of an international competition, the Global Physics Photowalk, so if you are unable to come to CERN, you may be able to attend a Photowalk at a laboratory closer to you. For more details see here. You can also follow the conversation on social media via the #PhysPics18 hashtag.

Does registration for and/or attendance at the CERN Photowalk qualify me for media accreditation?

No, registration and/or attendance does not qualify you for news media credentials at any CERN event, either now or in the future.

What about the copyright of the pictures taken during the CERN Photowalk?

All participants in the CERN Photowalk will be required to sign a “Transfer of Copyright in Images” release, stating that the images that they take during the event and which they then choose to submit to CERN for the competition (i.e. not all the images that they take - only the ones they decide to submit to CERN) will become the copyright of CERN. However, participants will nonetheless be granted a perpetual, non-exclusive, geographically unrestricted licence to use the submitted images for their own purposes, and CERN’s use of any image submitted  in the course of the event will be used with an appropriate credit for the photographer responsible for capturing the image. The release document will be provided to the chosen participants by the Organization ahead of the event.
